MailCraft

Changelog

0.7.0

· Release on GitHub

What’s new in 0.7.0 (an alpha for testers; sign up in #11): new mail from Microsoft accounts sooner, a proper menu bar on the Mac, and a way to report a problem from inside MailCraft.

  • Mail arrives sooner. For a Microsoft account, Send/Receive does every Inbox first, shared mailboxes included, skips folders that haven’t changed and keeps its connection open. Between runs, MailCraft checks each Inbox every minute (#276).
  • On the Mac, the menu bar at the top of the screen has MailCraft’s menus, and the message list has the thin scroll bar Mac programs use (thanks to @HerbJul and @pick2510).
  • Report a Problem, in the title bar beside Copy Diagnostics and in Help: say what went wrong, and MailCraft starts the report for you, on GitHub (the problem form filled in, in your browser, with the diagnostics saved to a file to attach; public) or by email (a new message to the maintainers from your own account, with the diagnostics attached; private). You read everything first, and nothing goes until you submit it or press Send.

Fixes

  • Move to Folder, Copy to Folder and the other folder menus have a search box at the top, so a folder is found by typing part of its name (#74, thanks to @strikerz5).
  • Show in Groups (View › Arrange By) turns the date headings off for one continuous list, and Single Line (View › Message Preview) shows each message on one line; thanks to @Schintilla for asking (#214).
  • Removing an account now removes its mail, attachments and remembered sign-in from this computer, and File › Info › Remove MailCraft’s data from this computer removes everything MailCraft keeps here, for an installed or a portable copy; mail on the servers is never touched (#177).
  • A shared mailbox, and the next account, no longer wait for your own calendar and contacts to download before their mail starts: calendar and contacts follow once the mail of every account is in, still at start-up and every 15 minutes (#276).
  • Ctrl+Q marks the selected messages read and no longer also closes the window (#269).
  • Calendar › View shows the four calendar views in place of the messages’ controls (#239).
  • Add Shared Mailbox no longer waits for a Send/Receive already under way, and once the new mailbox is added the rest of its download no longer holds up your own Send/Receive: your changes go out first, a sign-in left open in the browser no longer makes Add wait, and a Send/Receive you pressed still shows its errors (#70, #257, #274; thanks to @strikerz5 for #257).
  • A picture added to a signature that is over the size limit is made smaller instead of refused; when it still can’t be taken, the Signatures page says why (#270, thanks to @redfoxx15).
  • The Appointment window no longer turns the whole program light when Appearance follows a dark system (#266).
  • Right-clicking a selected time range in the calendar opens a menu with New Appointment, New Meeting and New All Day Event for that range (#261, thanks to @redfoxx15).
  • HTML mail laid out with a width, a maximum width, or centring by automatic margins (the usual centred newsletter card) now displays at that width and centred, not full width and misaligned (#150).
  • Newsletters, statements and notices keep their padding, margins, lines, rounded corners and line spacing, so their boxes and buttons no longer run into the text (#71, thanks to @strikerz5).
  • Send/Receive brings new mail in every Microsoft Inbox, shared mailboxes included, first, before the folders and the rest (#276).
  • Send/Receive is quicker on a Microsoft account with many folders: your own folders whose message and unread counts haven’t changed are skipped, and every folder is still read at the first Send/Receive after opening and once an hour, so flag and category changes there arrive by then (#276).
  • A Microsoft account’s Send/Receive keeps its connection to Microsoft open between requests instead of opening a new one for each, so it waits less (#276).
  • A Microsoft account with many folders lists them in a few requests instead of one for every folder that has subfolders, so Send/Receive gets to the mail sooner (#276).
  • New mail in every Microsoft Inbox, shared mailboxes included, shows within a minute: between Send/Receive runs MailCraft quietly checks each Inbox once a minute, as long as Send/Receive runs by itself (File › Options) (#276).
  • Arranged by size, each message in the list says its size under its time (#273).
  • Send/Receive of a Microsoft account no longer stops part-way through its folders with “InvalidAuthenticationToken” when the sign-in runs out during the run (a long first download, or the computer asleep in the middle of one): the sign-in is renewed once and the run goes on, and one about to run out is renewed before a job starts (#306).
  • Send/Receive of a Microsoft account no longer removes a message that was moved into another folder when the list of folders comes back incomplete and misses that folder: the message stays until a Send/Receive with the whole list finds it where it went (#305).
  • On a Mac, the message list’s rows reach the right edge, with a thin scroll bar over them while scrolling, as in other Mac programs (thanks to @pick2510 for reporting).
  • On macOS the menu bar at the top of the screen now has File, Edit, View, Folder, Message, Window and Help as well as MailCraft’s own menu, running the same commands with the same ⌘ keys (#253, thanks to @HerbJul).

Early alpha. The foundations are in place and tested, but much of what a daily mail program needs is not there yet, and most of the Microsoft 365 behaviour has only been tested against stand-ins. What works is in the README.

0.6.0

· Release on GitHub

What’s new in 0.6.0 (an alpha for testers; sign up in #11): shared mailboxes for everyone, four interface languages in preview, and older mail brought down when you ask for more.

  • Shared mailboxes. No longer behind a switch for testing. On the card of a work or school Microsoft account in File › Info, Add Shared Mailbox opens a shared mailbox you have access to: its mail is read, searched, changed, written and sent from its own address, with a signature of its own, and moved or copied to and from your own mailbox. Microsoft asks once for each permission it needs, the first time it’s needed.
  • Interface languages (preview). French, German, Spanish and Italian, in File › Options › General › Language (Automatic follows the system’s language). Every text is translated, with dates, the clock and the first day of the week as each language has them. Each is marked Preview (“Deutsch (Vorschau)”) until a native speaker has reviewed it: corrections are welcome, and docs/translating.md says how (#254).
  • More mail when you ask for it. Raising File › Options › Messages to download per folder (or setting it to All) now brings down the older mail a smaller limit left out, at the next Send/Receive of an IMAP account (#223, thanks to @vvaltson).
  • Favorites name two accounts’ folders of one name with their account (“Inbox - Work”), thanks to @mickeyr.
  • Reminder windows follow the main window’s light or dark theme, and carry its icon.

Fixes

  • Raising Messages to download per folder now brings the older mail down, and a message moved to another account no longer comes down again (#223).
  • A mailbox with an account of a kind this version doesn’t know (added by a newer MailCraft) now opens, and the account is kept as it was written (#243).
  • Security: the TLS certificate-checking libraries are updated for RUSTSEC-2026-0381 and RUSTSEC-2026-0382.

0.5.2

· Release on GitHub

What’s new in 0.5.2 (an alpha for testers; sign up in #11): desktop alerts, a new Microsoft registration, and thanks to our testers.

  • Desktop alerts. A reminder that falls due, and new mail in the Inbox of your own accounts while MailCraft is in the background, show as the system’s notifications (Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD). Only the sender and the subject are shown, never the message text; more than three at once become one. Click one to open the message. Turn either kind off in File › Options › Desktop alerts. On Windows they need the .msi install, not the portable zip; on macOS the system asks once whether MailCraft may show them.
  • Sign in once more to Microsoft accounts. MailCraft now signs in with the project’s new Microsoft registration, so a sign-in remembered by 0.5.1 or earlier is asked for again, once. In an organisation that approves applications centrally, the administrator approves the new one too.
  • About › Testers thanks, by name, the testers who said yes to being credited. Sign up in #11.

0.5.1

· Release on GitHub

What’s new in 0.5.1 (an alpha for testers; sign up in #11): security fixes, and the first release a copy of 0.5.0 updates itself to.

  • Replies and forwards keep the original’s look, and nothing that runs or tracks. The original under your text keeps its layout, tables, styles and pictures, but scripts, style sheets, embedded objects, forms, unsafe links, tracking pixels and text the sender hid no longer go out to your recipients.
  • Safer file names. Saving an attachment, Save As and exports clean every name that comes from mail: no hidden direction-reversing characters (invoice‮fdp.exe showing as a PDF), invisible characters or reserved Windows names. Attachment chips show the cleaned name.
  • Links say where they really go. A link’s tip names the real host first, in plain ASCII (xn--… for an international name), so https://bank.example@evil.example reads as evil.example. Links with invisible formatting characters are refused, and only web, mail and phone addresses are ever handed to the system.
  • More attachment kinds are saved, never opened: remote desktop, web query, SYLK, Office add-in, Access shortcut, Outlook profile, help project and Program Manager group files.
  • Private files. On Linux, macOS and FreeBSD the settings folder, logs and downloaded pictures are readable by you alone.
  • Updating. A downloaded update is trusted by the digest in the signed list, and the installer is handed a checked copy in a fresh private folder.
  • GNOME under Wayland draws the window’s title bar (#207, thanks to @ragelfundionctrumnar).
  • Every reader of mail, calendars, contacts and server replies is now fuzzed in CI.

0.5.0

· Release on GitHub

What’s new in 0.5.0 (an alpha for testers; sign up in #11). 0.4.3 was never published, so its changes are here too:

  • Updates itself. A copy installed from the .msi, the macOS app or an AppImage downloads a newer release, keeps it only when MailCraft’s own release signature (SHA256SUMS.txt.sig) checks out, and installs it when you press Restart to update or quit. If the new version fails to start twice, it goes back to the one before. File › Options › Install updates automatically turns it off; an organisation can turn it off for everyone (DISABLEAUTOMATICUPDATES=1 for the .msi, a policy key, or a file: see PRIVACY.md). This release is the first one signed this way, so the first copy that updates itself is 0.5.0, updating to the release after it.
  • Microsoft accounts through Microsoft Graph. An account set up with an earlier version is offered the switch once; new ones use Graph from the start. Sending, drafts, undo after a change reached the server, Send/Receive Progress (status bar or Send / Receive › Show Progress, with Skip and Stop).
  • Mail to keep offline (Microsoft accounts, File › Info and Account Settings): keep 3 days to All of your mail in full, and older mail as headers and a preview that downloads when opened. At 200,000 messages a 1-month window took the mailbox from 4.9 GB on disk to 184 MB.
  • Faster, lighter big mailboxes. The mailbox file is a log of changes, attachments and older bodies stay on disk until wanted, and the first save after a large download runs in the background.
  • Search. Answered from a word index kept beside the mailbox; More results on the server for Microsoft accounts; has:attachment finds mail not downloaded yet; keywords such as From: show as pills; from: name works with a space; a search of All Mailboxes names each result’s folder.
  • Reading. Mail in every WHATWG character set reads properly, and a character that couldn’t be read is shown and explained; HTML mail’s centred layouts, pictures in a line of text and rows of icons; attachments open with the system’s program; contacts in any character set.
  • Icons redrawn as one set, clear in light and dark.
  • Use system setting now follows the Linux desktop’s light or dark scheme, and changes with it.
  • Gmail: Archive moves to All Mail, Delete for good through the Trash.
  • An original is marked replied or forwarded once the answer has actually gone. Deleting a contact asks first. Links and sign-in pages bring the browser to the front on Linux.
  • Signing in as someone other than the address typed is asked about, never taken silently.
  • Many fixes: a token renewed before it runs out mid Send/Receive, preferences saved whole, a message over 16 MB downloads through Graph, quitting on macOS without the Touch Bar crash, the ribbon and File › Info spacing.

Early alpha. The foundations are in place and tested, but much of what a daily mail program needs is not there yet, and most of the Microsoft 365 behaviour has only been tested against stand-ins. What works is in the README.

What’s new in 0.4.1 (an alpha for testers; sign up in #11):

  • MCP: agents get only what the owner allows. Every command has a class for agents; sending, deleting for good, accounts, the mailbox file, options and rules are asked about in the app’s window (Don’t is the default), or refused by a server without a window unless started with --allow; files on this computer are named only inside a folder given with --files; message text reaches agents marked as untrusted data. See docs/mcp.md. Fixes GHSA-q9j2-2cx5-q7p6, reported by @Jeremy8776; thank you.

MailCraft keeps your mailbox in its settings folder and saves as you go; one window per mailbox. With a Microsoft 365 or Outlook.com account you sign in on Microsoft’s page, and the sign-in is kept by the system’s credential store (Windows, macOS, and the Secret Service of GNOME Keyring or KWallet on Linux). What works, and how far each part is from Outlook, is in the README and in docs/gaps.md.

The builds are not signed with a publisher certificate yet: Windows SmartScreen and macOS Gatekeeper will ask before running them.

0.4.0

· Release on GitHub

What’s new in 0.4.0 (an alpha for testers; sign up in #11):

  • Rich signatures with a logo, in File › Signatures: one for new messages and one for replies and forwards per account, with pictures, fonts and colour; make one from your name, title, phone, email and website (the links work), and see it as recipients will before you send.
  • Font and font colour in messages you write, beside bold, italic, sizes and lists.
  • Copy Diagnostics, in Help and as a button in the title bar: the version, the system and a record of what the program did, with no message, address, password or token in it, ready to paste into a problem report. Nothing is sent.
  • Fixed: you could no longer type in a message after switching to another window and back (#60), nor, we expect, after forwarding one (#61); a message’s text now fills the reading pane (#47); some web servers refused to send a message’s pictures (#46); a message deleted on another device no longer counts as new mail; when Google refuses a password, MailCraft says an app password is needed (#44).
  • The project now lives at UCS-Care-Group/mailcraft.
  • Known: Microsoft accounts still use IMAP; the move to Microsoft Graph is in progress. A mailbox opened in 0.4.0 may lose its signatures if opened again in 0.3.0.

Early alpha. The foundations are in place and tested, but much of what a daily mail program needs is not there yet, and most of the Microsoft 365 behaviour has only been tested against stand-ins. What works is in the README.

0.3.0

· Release on GitHub

What’s new in 0.3.0 (the first alpha for testers; sign up in #11):

  • Replies, forwards and new messages in rich text: bold, italic, underline, sizes, links and lists eight levels deep, from the ribbon or the keyboard; formatted copy and paste; replies keep the original’s layout below.
  • Sign-ins remembered on Linux and FreeBSD (GNOME Keyring, KWallet).
  • Exchange Web Services removed: Outlook’s Favorites are read through Microsoft Graph alone.
  • A folder’s changes made offline survive the server renumbering it; a series ending on a day whose last hour the clocks skip ends that day; new mail no longer keeps the taskbar button lit.
  • Known: over IMAP, Exchange hides folders whose names contain /; downloads of large mailboxes are slow. Both are fixed by the move to Microsoft Graph, in progress.

Early alpha. The foundations are in place and tested, but much of what a daily mail program needs is not there yet, and most of the Microsoft 365 behaviour has only been tested against stand-ins. What works is in the README.
